I have done this kayaking experience more than 5 times in the past 10 years. This is mainly due to work. That said, it’s the work I look forward to. It’s because paddling along Semadang River offers pristine scenery with lush rainforest. The area has dramatic rock formations. If you are lucky, you might spot kingfishers.

Semadang Kayak is perfect for beginners and families. The river is generally calm and the trip is all downstream, meaning you need not have any prior experience. The river guides provide a safety briefing and basic paddling techniques before you start.

I was back on this river just recently as August 9, 2025 with my regular hiking buddies. We decided that for a change, we should try the Semadang Kayak Adventure. The kayaking package that we took was the Semadang River Kayaking which includes local lunch at the base camp. In my opinion, it is important that the operator is Semadang Borneo Adventure. They are locals from Semadang Village itself. So, they know every twist and turn of the river. Very convincing.
Kayaking Highlights
The total kayaking distance is 10km according to the guide. For our group, it took us slightly over 3 hours to complete. We had a few stops along the river to rest. We also stopped to experience other attractions along the Semadang River.
First stop was the lovely, small yet picturesque Aruong Piin Trusan wasterfall. Only like 3 minutes from the river.

Then it was off to the village down river, Kampung Danu. Here we were more or less participated in the “TAGANG” system, a local fish conservation program by hand-feeding wild fish. After about 20 minutes then it was off again to the final end point Kampung Semadang. Paddling down this scenic river we were then served with a lovely local lunch. Semadang Kayak Adventure is muslim friendly as they don’t serve pork.

Practical Information
Tour Structure: A typical day trip from Kuching will involve a scenic 1 to 1.5-hour drive to the Semadang River area. After the kayaking and activities, you’ll be brought back to your hotel in the late afternoon.
- Guides: You’ll be accompanied by experienced, English-speaking guides who are also trained in first aid. They provide local knowledge about the flora and fauna and even take photos for you.
- What to Bring and Wear: Wear lightweight, quick-drying clothes and well-fitting shoes or sandals with good grip (no flip-flops!). You’ll need a change of clothes, a towel, and sun protection (sunscreen and a hat). It’s also a good idea to bring insect repellent and a waterproof bag for your phone and camera.
- Meals: A delicious, home-cooked Bidayuh lunch is usually included in the tour package, often with fresh local ingredients.
