The Trek: An Immersion into the Rainforest
The hike to Jangkar Waterfall is considered moderately easy. It is perfect for those seeking a genuine rainforest immersion. You don’t need extreme mountaineering skills. The trail stretches about 3 kilometers one-way. It typically takes 1 to 2 hours to finish. This depends on your pace and the conditions of the river.
Initially, you’ll traverse through the serene landscapes of local fruit orchards and private small palm oil plantations. After hiking halfway, you will enter secondary forests. You will go through these forests for about 30 minutes before reaching Jangkar River.

Prepare to navigate over slippery rocks, large boulders, and through varying depths of water. That is why for such trips into the jungle, it demands sturdy, non-slip footwear and a good sense of balance. Having a local guide is crucial. They know the safest paths. They can also offer assistance through tricky sections.
Best Time to Visit and What to Pack
To fully enjoy the Jangkar experience, plan your visit during Sarawak’s dry season, from March to September. During these months, the trails are less muddy. River levels are typically lower. This makes for safer and more enjoyable crossings. Avoid the monsoon season, which occurs from November to February. Heavy rainfall can make the trails extremely slippery. The river currents can also become dangerous.
For your trek, essential items include:
- Sturdy, non-slip shoes or river sandals: Crucial for navigating wet and rocky terrain.
- Waterproof bag/dry bag: To protect your electronics and valuables.
- Plenty of drinking water and snacks: Stay hydrated and energized.
- Insect repellent: The rainforest is home to various critters.
- Swimwear, towel, and a change of clothes: You’ll definitely want to take a dip!
- Basic first-aid kit: For minor scrapes or cuts.
