2021 Sarawak Travel Bucket List

It’s already mid January 2021 and for us in Sarawak, what a start to the new year. Covid19 still is a major concern with three (3) red zones in Sarawak. Heavy downfall in the second week of January saw floods affecting Kuching, one of the worst in over 15 years.

Hopefully yours is better start to 2021. Ours will be better. Despite travel restrictions till end of January 2021, I wish to believe things will be brighter for 2021. Once it is, I would love to head back on the road and explore the vast backyard of Sarawak.

Here is to share with you, the bucket list that I have prepared. Probably it could also give you an idea of where to go in Sarawak for 2021.

Mulu National Park

Mulu National Park, my favourite national park. Friendly people, lovely nature and fantastic caves. Last visit was in July 2019 and is one of my top place to revisit in 2021. Plan to ditch the resort comfort and stay at one of the many home stays available near the park.

Looking forward to a picnic at the Clearwater Cave and going for a dip in the cool stream.

Highlands of Borneo

Another lovely getaway and that which I always look forward to. A visit to Ba’kelalan and catch up with my foster family Julia and Sang Sigar. Have a good chit chat with him over coffee and the lovely home made buns of his other half,Julia. Catch up on his latest artwork and how the kids of SK Ba’kelalan holding up with the eco-brick project.

Of course a visit to Bario and staying with buddy Scot Apoi’s Ngimat Ayu Homestay. Looking forward to having a few pineapple cocktails with him and exchanging stories. A pop down to the village stalls would also be welcoming, I hope Victoria still makes those yummy banana fritters. Look out for Victoria Enterprise. The best banana fritters in the whole valley!

A trip to Ulu Baram would be welcoming too. This time hopefully a trip to Long Julan, Maybe get to see the Sarawak’s (probably also in Malaysia) tallest waterfall. Then a visit to my Kenyah family in Long Sela’an and maybe up to Lio Mato.

Bidayuh Hinterland

Since I am based in Kuching, exploring further the Bidayuh hinterlands of Bau, Padawan and Serian would be a weekend escapade.

Jungle camping, trekking and waterfalls, plenty to be explored. probably this year I would finally make it to visit Saloma Homestay. Been putting this on hold for a very long time. Must do in 2021.

Final Journey – Sibu Kapit Express

Just recently in 2020, the Sarawak Government finally completed the road construction that finally connects Kapit to Sibu. Road journeys from Kapit to Sibu are now becoming a trend, especially during the weekend. The roads have made it easier to self drive.

This new road however, marks the start of what I foresee as, a beginning to the end of the mighty Rajang’s iconic express boat services. I plan to document as much as possible, the experiences of this express boat ride before the operators call it a day.

Travelling Responsibly for 2021

Travelling responsibly has been the lesson for 2020 and it is a good reminder to self that my travels must always take into account social distancing. It is the new norm. Best we all do the same.
